4/4/09: Kratos Wrestlers Wrap Up 2008/9 Season With Six Place Winners at Stow Bulldog Open

Six Kratos wrestlers crossed the city's southern boundary to compete in the Stow Bulldog Open on Saturday, April 4th. With 4 mats in use, the event moved quickly along. Most weight classes were run in a round robin format which provided ample opportunities to compete. Kratos had three wrestlers who were undefeated in the day to include Mitchell Soucek(5-0), Nathan Szock (3-0), and Kyle Minor (2-0). All three wrestlers showed grit and determination as they worked their way through their weight class. Several matches were won in the last period where the score was either tied or Kratos was able to come from behind for the win. A noteable win by Mitchell Soucek as he won his match with a takedown with about 5 seconds left in match regulation time. Kratos also saw Matt Williams earn a 2nd place trophy after going 4-1 on the day. In third place, Kratos wrestlers Ronnie Pietro (2-2) and Matt Slater (1-2) rounded out the day's trophy count.

With the completion of the Stow Bulldog event, Team Kratos closes out the 2008/9 season and begins to turn attention to next season.

3/21/09: Two Kratos Wrestlers Crack Top 12 at OAC Grade School State Championships

Kratos Wresters capped off an exciting 2008/9 season with the Grade School State Wrestling Championships in Marion, Ohio. The Grade School State Wrestling Championships brought together over 1,000 wrestlers from across the state of Ohio to compete in a very well organized and professional tournament. The event boasted all of the pomp and circumstance one would expect out of a state championship billing.

2009 OAC Slideshow

Our team wrestled tough and finished with two kids in the top 12 of their respective 32 man brackets. Congratulations to David Cumberledge and Ronnie Pietro for their hard-nosed, top 12 performances. Both David and Ronnie were one match away from competing on final's night which was reserved for the top 8 placers in each field. As a whole, all of our wrestlers left everything they had on the mat which is something of which they can all be quite proud. The competition at the Grade School tournament is "hands down" the toughest tournament you will find in the state of Ohio.

Our team had an enjoyable time when not competing to include activities such as swimming at the host hotel pool and several team dinners at local area restaurants. Of course the primary focus was wrestling, but the moments of relaxation allowed everyone to adjust following a day of on the edge of the chair wrestling.

2/8/09: Motter and Pietro Qualify For OYWA League Championships

Well, many words to describe today's event. Exhilarating, stressful, moments of joy and dispair......what a great sport this is :-) At the end of the day, Team Kratos qualified two wrestlers to the OYWA League championship and had 4 reached within 1 match of qualifying. Congratulations to Chris Motter (3rd place) and Ronnie Pietro (4th place) . Both Chris and Ronnie wrestled some of the best matches of their careers and were a delight to watch compete.

Soucek vs Uniontown Lake
Mitchell Soucek Maintains Control and Eliminates a Youth Wrestler from Uniontown Lake During Consolation Bouts at Districts.

Chris met two wrestlers in-route to his 3rd place finish whom he had lost to earlier in the season. He dispatched both of them with a commanding performance. Ronnie wrestled beyond his years and just kept plugging away Ronnie style. He rallied in his consolation semi final match to overcome a 5 point deficit to win in the final 5 secs of the match..WOW. While Chris and Ronnie were the only two Kratos wrestlers we had finish in the top 4, , there were many other exciting matches through out day. Mitchell Soucek wrestled the best I've seen him this year and knocked off a very talented wrestler from Uniontown Lake and then another wrestler from Cuyahoga Falls who had beaten Mitchell at the home match we had with CF several weeks back. Mitchell made it into all the way to the Consolation semi-finals. Lastly, Billy Buehl wrestled tough all day but fell just 1 match short of qualifying for the League championship. He was one of two Kratos wrestlers who made an appearance in the Semi-Finals, but Billy lost against a talented wrestler from Wadsworth....argh. ( my money is on Billy the next time they wrestle :-)

2/1/09: Kratos Advances Eleven Wrestlers To OYWA Districts

Cumberledge vs Woodridge

In our all star ranks, we had 10 wrestlers compete at the Brunswick novice tournament. The tournament ran very well and most of our wrestlers had 3 or more matches. Place winners included 1st Place finish: Oleg Waters, 3rd place finish: Mat Zelick, 4th place finish: Chris Castrigano

1/25/09: Kratos Caps Off League Competition With a 7-1 Dual Match Record and Three Champions in the Allstar Tournament

Kratos wrestlers capped off the 08/9 OYWA League series with a dual match victory against Woodridge (33 to 19) and an All-Star Tournament where 10 of the 16 Kratos wrestlers who competed, finished in the top 4 of their bracket. The dual match victory brings Kratos' dual match record to 7-1 for the season which is a remarkable improvement from last year where the team finished 1-6. Equal improvement occurred on the All-Star mats this year. Going into the all-star tournament, Kratos had seven wrestlers who had only been defeated once during the season, and one wrestler who was undefeated.

All Star Tournament place winners included:

Several weeks remain in the season for the Novice wrestlers, so don't put away the wrestling shoes quite yet!!

Kratos wrestlers traveled to Streetsboro to attend the 2nd Annual Streetsboro Invitational "Meat Grinder" Tournament. This tournament featured 16 team from across northeast Ohio. "This was the first time Team Kratos has entered a team style tournament, so the event was a bit of a coming-out party for the kids." commented

Coach Williams. Team Kratos wrestlers responded well and in fact, seemed to have caught many of the opposing teams offguard. Kratos rolled quietly on to qualify 5 of its 15 varsity wrestlers to either the championship or consolation finals matches. "We entered the final round of consolations with the ability to put seven kids into the finals and we were able to execute on nearly all of the opportunities." Although total team score was not available at time of this posting, Team Kratos expected to have finished well in the top half of the tournament teams which more then meets the expectation set before the day had begun. Wrestlers reaching the podium included:

Next year, our goal will be to win a couple of individual championships and perhaps target a top 3 finish from a team perspective, so back to work we go.

1/15/09: Under the Light's, Kratos Style !!

This evening, Kratos wrestlers had the opportunity to wrestle "Under the Lights" before the High School wrestling match against Cuyahoga Falls wrestling program. Team Kratos wrestlers competed in a dual match format against the Mat Cat's from Cuyahoga Falls. The Mat Cats entered the evening with a dual match record of 11-4 which set the stage for an exciting evening of wrestling. Both team fielded a varsity line up consisting of twelve wrestlers. Team Kratos delivered the first blows by winning the first three matches of the evening. Quick pins were conceived by

Matthew Williams and David Cumberledge. Ronnie Pietro also delivered an exciting win by a margin of 1 point at the 60 lbs weight class. As the event entered into the middle weight bouts, the Mat Cats began to claw back by winning close decisions at the 64lb and 70lbs weight classes. Kratos regained moment by winning the next three matches with victories by Billy Buehle, Chris Motter, Michael Szoch. These wins put a potential victory out of reach by the Mat Cats, a deciding factor since Cuyahoga Falls was able to deliver the final blows of the evening by winning matches at 102, 120 and 130lbs. Team Kratos. The final score was Team Kratos 29 - Mat Cats 21.

A note of appreciation is extended to Cuyahoga Falls Youth Wrestling Team for making the event possible.

1/11/09: Kratos Sends The Cardinals Flying South For the Winter

Today, Kratos wrestlers brought their "A" game to league competition. After a week of fast-paced practices, our wrestlers were ready to pounce like a cat on an unsuspecting flock of Cardinals. The varsity team set the tempo by defeating the Kenmore Cardinals youth program by a decisive score of 26 - 3.

The Look of Intensity, Wrestlers Mathew Williams and Kenmore Opponent Initiate Action at the 53lb Weight Class

Team Kratos lighter weights opined an overall team win by winning the first three bouts of the match. Matthew Williams pinned his opponent in 1:34. Ronnie Pietro wrestled at 56lbs and defeated a talented wrestler from Kenmore by a score of 7-0 followed by David Cumberledge who continued the momentum by pinning his opponent in 1:33. The second half of our Kratos lineup faired equally well by winning two out of the next three bouts. Nathan Szoch earned a technical fall (12-0) and Chris Motter pinned his opponent at 1:47. All star wrestlers stayed the course by winning well over 70% of the All-Stars matches in which we competed.

Team Kratos improves their record to 5-1 in league competition.

1/4/09: Kratos Wraps up a Busy Holiday Schedule

Team Kratos closed out the holiday period with a weekend of tough wrestling. On Saturday, nineteen of our wrestlers competed within either the Medina Open or the Sandusky tournament and then on Sunday we had our weekly league match.

The Medina Tournament lived up to its billing of being one of the toughest in the state. Several weight classes had over 20 participants, many of whom brought with them significant past accomplishments. On the novice mats, we had three 1st place finishes ( Kyle Minor, Colin Hall, and Joey Hawthorne), one 2nd place (Will Orazen) and one 4th place (Grant Gonya). We also had several other novice wrestlers who won multiple matches and fell just short of finishing on the podium. On the open mats, we had three place winners, Mathew Williams (2nd place), David Cumberledge (4th place) and Chris Motter (4th place). The hardest wrestling bracket of the tournament was probably faced by David Cumberledge. David had a 27 man bracket sheet which required him to get by several ohio top-ranked individuals in order to work his way into a final bout. Dave won four matches in a row which put him in a semi-final bout against a wrestler who placed 3rd in OAC states last year. Dave battled hard but lost this match on points. At several points in the match, David was ahead. After losing his semi-final, e won his next match against a wrestler from Kenmore which put him into the consolation finals where he faced an OAC state champ last year. David wrestled very tough through 3 periods and then was caught on his back during a scramble situation and was unfortunately dispatched.

Elsewhere, Billy Buehle placed 2nd at the Sandusky Husky tournament. He was out of town due to a wedding, yet found some time to compete in a local tournament. Billy took a 2nd place by defeating 3 opponents along the way to the championship match. Good job Billy.

League Dual Match against Team Irish. Team Irish only had four varsity wrestlers available to compete on the Varsity mat this week. Unfortunately, of the four matches, we ended up six team points behind which yielded a loss. The final score was 14 to 8. The loss puts our overall record at 4-1 on the season but some important learning's which we will pass along at Tuesday's practice.

12/28/08: Kratos Improves Record to 4-0 with a 37-12 decision over Barberton

Today, Team Kratos wrestlers improved their dual match record to 4-0 by defeating Barberton 37-12. Our wrestlers got off to a strong start with lightweight wins by Tyler Johnson, (score 11-1), David Cumberledge (12-4), and Ronnie Pietro (Tech Fall at 2:33). Tyler contributed in his first appearance in the varsity lineup with a commanding performance. David and Ronnie both followed suit by solid wins which seemed to energize the rest of the Kratos line-up. Our Middle weights sealed the deal with pins by Mitchell Souchek (0:30secs), Billy Buehle (0:39secs), and Chris Motter (0:55) and a win by Christian Owsley (15-6) and Kyle Minor (6-1). In the heavy weight brackets, a much improved Patrick Butler came out ready to fight as indicated by scoring 9 unanswered points in his first varsity win (9-0). In exhibition matches, Matthew Williams pinned his opponent from Barberton in a time of 0:44 secs. Barberton is notoriously tough at all levels (youth, middle school and high school), so a win by our boys should not be taken lightly and was the result of the whole team contributing to the effort.

12/22/08: Kratos Wins Third in a Row

Team Kratos entered into the Holiday season with a growing tide of momentum. In the third week in a row, Kratos wrestlers delivered a victory during dual match competition. On Sunday, December 22nd, our wrestlers paired up against Magadore

Patrick Butler prevents the escape of his North Akron captive.

for Week # 3 of Ohio Youth Wrestling action. Our varsity squad won all eight of the matches in which it completed to finish with a team score 41-0. Magadore delivered a gallant effort but was significantly disadvantaged from the start due to several of their best wrestlers missing from the line-up due to illness and holiday travels. Winning by pin for Team Kratos included Matt Williams (0:40), Ronnie Pietro (0:22), Grant Gasser (1:54), and Matt Slater (1:48). Winning by technical fall were David Cumberledge (2:19), Chris Motter (2:30). Winning by decision were Mitchell Souchek (7-2), and Joey Hawthorne (12-4).

Earlier during weekend competition, eight of our varsity wrestlers competed in open tournaments. Billy Buehle earned a second place finish at the Lakewood Open where he dethroned a OAC state qualifier and a Tournament of Champions place winner to win his 2nd place result. David Cumberledge and Matthew Williams finished third place a the McDowell Open tournament in Erie, PA.

Keep up the good work boys.

12/15/08: Kratos defeats Streetsboro in dual match 31-27

Team Kratos delivered another week of exciting wrestling on its way to capture its second victory of the season. Our wrestlers faced neighboring Streetsboro in competition at Firestone High School this past weekend. On the varsity mat, Team Kratos won eight matches, lost 6 matches and had one match end in a tie. The

overall team score was 31 - 27 in our favor. Joey Hawthorne led the team by gaining a win by pinfall in a time of 1:35. Joey fought his way back after nearly being pinned in the first period to turn the tide and pin his opponent in the second period. Two wrestlers won by tech fall, Chris Motter and Michael Szoch. Other varsity wrestlers who brought wins across the line included David Cumberledge (4-0), Nick Farrell (6-0), Billy Buehle (3-2), Kyle Minor (6-0), and Nathan Szoch (6-4).

On the All Star matches, our team brought forward an excellent effort and won more then 50% of the matches in which we competed. Although there are probably a lot of exciting stories to tell, one bout highlight that was brought to my attention was a win by first year wrestler, Austin Mullens who was paired up against a 3 year veteran. Austin looked past the experience gap and wrestled hard and brought back a victory improving his record to 2-0 on the All-Star mats.

12/8/08: Kratos snatches a 30-29 decision from last year division champs,

Team Kratos had a great turn-out at yesterday's match bringing over 40 wrestlers to the first league match of the 2008 season. On the varsity mat, Kratos wrestlers took on the last division champs, Butchel Youth. In the first test of 2008, Team Kratos won 7 of the 14 matches however the ability to win a couple of matches by pin-fall allowed Kratos to gain the overall advantage in team score by the narrowest of margins, 30-29.

Austin Mullens

Buchtel's brought a seasoned squad of veteran wrestlers, including returning state champion, Jordan Decatur and several other state place winners. It seemed as every match was a battle, which made for a very exciting match. A number of bouts were decided in the waning seconds of the last period which put the fans on the edge of their seats. Leading the way for Team Kratos were pivotal pins by Mitchell Soucek (0:27) , Billy Buehle (1:57), and Matt Slater ( 2:44). Slater pinned an opponent, to whom he was spotting 15 lbs, as regulation time was about to expire thereby securing Team Kratos an overall victory. Achieving wins by decision included Ronnie Pietro (3-2), Nick Farrell (6-4), Nathan Szoch (6-2), and Michael Szoch (8-2). "I was delighted to see how aggressive our wrestlers competed. Even wrestlers who lost their bout put on a never give up attitude. What a great start and one that serves as a solid base from which to build" commented coach Doug Williams.

12/1/08: Kratos Competes Far & Wide During Thanksgiving

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday and had time to reflect upon the many blessings God provides to all of us. When I sat down this morning at my computer, I had several emails from parents who were kind enough to send in reports from the long weekend. After reading them, I realized just how fortunate we are to have the means and ability to pursue varied interests.

Team Kratos wrestlers were very busy this past week. We had team practices on Tues and Wed last week and then several kids (5 to be exact) attended a 3 day wrestling camp on Friday - Sunday morning in State College, Pennsylvania and then competed in a Thanksgiving Tournament in State College later in the day.

Others among our team competed in several local area tournaments which included the Twinsburg Tournament and the Luthern West Cowboy Tournament.
