8/22/10: Strong Finish to Kratos Summer Training Program

Congratulations to all the participants who finished this year's summer training program with Team Kratos. Kratos wrestling wrapped up its inaugural summer training program this past weekend with a solid turnout of nearly 20 wrestlers. As a special surprise, Kratos wrestling passed out free t-shirts to all the kids who consistently put forth the little extra effort by attending our summer training program. If you happen to see one of the Kratos wrestlers, make sure to ask them what separates the ordinary from the EXTRAordinary. On that closing thought, Kratos staff wishes everyone the best as you head back to school.

7/22/10: Mid-Summer Update

This summer, a strong contingency of Kratos wrestlers have dedicated themselves to improvement. A total of 19 wrestlers have now attended one or more summer camps and nearly the entire varsity squad from last season finds time to attend open mats. Recently ten of our kids traveled to State College, PA to attend a 5 day camp with Ken Chertow. Wrestlers making the trip included Gavin & Dawson Wervey, Mason and Michael Coleman, Matt Williams, Kyle Minor, Joey Hawthorne, Austin Mullens, Ronnie Pietro and Matt Slater. For some of these kids, this was the second camp of the summer. Other members of Kratos wrestling have journied to Jeff Jordan's State Champ Camp in Urbana, Ohio. These wrestlers include Ronnie Pietro, Mitchell Souchek, and Zach Wiseman.

As we begin to turn a focus toward August, our wrestlers are encouraged to find some time to make it to summer mats which are held on Sunday's through the end of August.

For those of you entered in Hudson Hawks Football, we wish you the best in your upcoming season.

3/12/2010: Kratos Places Three Wrestlers At OAC Grade School States

Team Kratos wrestlers put on an excellent showing at the 2010 Ohio Grade School State Championships. Kratos wrestlers were able put three wrestlers onto the podium. Podium finishers were: 3rd Place: Zach Wiseman (50lbs) 7th Place: Matt Williams (55lbs) 7th Place: Ronnie Pietro (60 lbs).

2010 Placewinners
2010 Grade School State Championship Placewinners (from left): Ronnie Pietro (60lbs), Zach Wiseman (50lbs), Matt Williams (55lbs)

Zach put a string of three victories together to reach the semifinals against Mansfield's Michael Morganstern. Zach had faced Michael earlier in the season at the OYWA league championships where Zach pulled out an overtime victory so the rematch had the makings of a thriller. Michael gained the upperhand early in the match with a couple of quick takedowns and then held off a late match surge by Zach leaving the score 6-1 in Morganstern's favor. A resilient Zach bounced back to dispatch his consolation semifinal opponent, Cole Skinner of Middleton, Ohio by a score of 6-0. Zach then finished his 2010 State Championship run with a win in the Consolation Finals by a score of 4-2 against Corbin Saldusky from Tiffen, Ohio. Corbin scored a quick takedown in the first period however Zach put the throttle down and scored a takedown for himself in the 2nd period. Zach maintained momentum and kept Corbin off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match. Zach scored a go-for-the-win takedown in the 3rd period to seal the victory and 3rd place championship.

Matt Williams won his first match by pinfall but then lost his second match against Nate Telvick (Fairfield, Ohio) in a closely contested bout. Nate would later go on to become champion at the 55lb weight class at the tournament. Dropping into the consolation rounds, Matt began day 2 of the tournament with a long grind of consolation matches. Matt won his next three bouts to include knocking out a 2009 OAC Finalist (Nolan McCune) and winning a sudden death overtime victory against Dylan Shawver (from Lorain's Burnett Training Program) to whom he had lost to earlier this season. This secured Matt a top 8 podium spot. Matt's winning streak was finally snapped in the consolation quarterfinals where he lost a nail-biting, 2-0 decision against Jaysen Knick (Troy, Ohio). Matt nearly scored twice in the first period with aggressive offense on his feet, however 1st period time ran out just as he was covering his opponent. In the second period, Jaysen initiated a quick shot which caught Matt offguard and secured the only points in the match. With this loss, Matt participated in a shootout for 7/8th place where he decisioned Nick Sabin from Mentor by a dominating score of 7-0.

Ronnie Pietro won his first two matches of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals by defeating Austin Partin (Akron,OH), and Thomas Jeffrey Thomas (unattached). In the quarterfinals, Ronnie faced a real bruiser, Nate Keaton (from Circleville ) whom knocked Ronnie out of the championship brackets. Ronnie came back to win his next consolation round by defeating Matthew Cardello of Columbus based Team Miron to guarantee a top 8 finish. In the next round of the consolation brackets, Ronnie squared off against a wrestler from East Toledo whom Ronnie had faced several weeks back at the St Ignatius Districts Tournament. The East Toledo wrestler was able to hold Ronnie at bay despite a flurry of attacks from Ronnie and near scoring at several periods end. The final score was 4-0 which sent Ronnie to the 7/8th place bracket. In this 7/8th place finals match, Ronnie wrestled perhaps the best match of his career. Ronnie held his ground against a competitor from the perennial powerhouse, St. Parish Graham. Ronnie gained the advantage with a takedown early in the second period and then suffocated his opponent's offense to secure the win by a slim 3-2 margin.

Team Caravan
Kratos Wrestlers assemble in Hudson before heading out to the State Championships

While Kratos had three wrestlers reach to podium at the Ohio State Championships, there were a number of other wrestlers who won matches and went deep in the tournament before being knocked out of medal contention. Reaching the TOP 12 which meant they were within 1 match of a podium finish included 2nd year wrestler Austin Mullens, David Cumberledge, and Tyler Johnson.

The journey to the state championships is one of the most difficult roads to travel in terms of wrestling competition today. It requires tireless dedication of an individual, hours of hard work, and a willingness to remain mentally tough as the storms of competition swell. Our Kratos wrestlers proved to both themselves and their opponents that they embody all of these facets which have only just begun to sparkle.

2/22/10: Twelve Kratos Wrestlers Now Qualified for OAC States

Another weekend in the book and another step towards our season climax of the OAC State Championships. This past weekend, we had about 12 kids across both the MS and Grade School compete at various OAC District Qualifiers around the area. In total, Kratos wrestling was able to qualify seven more individuals to bring the total count of Kratos wrestlers who will be making a trip to the State Championships this year at Marion, Ohio to TWELVE which surpasses our previous record of 10 qualifers set last year.

2/15/10: Kratos Wrestling Places 24th at OYWA Championships

Congratulations to Zach Wiseman and Matt Slater on their  breakout performances at the 2010 OYWA Championships.  Zach Wiseman took 4th place at the 52lb weight class and Matt Slater took 5th place. Overall, our team finished in a 3-way tie for  24th place out of a field of 120 teams.  Ronnie Pietro also contributed significant team points throughout the day by going 2-2 during the event.

Zach Wiseman and Matt Slater reached the Championship Semi-finals by winning their first two matches.  In the first round, Zach defeated Billy Osborne (Manchester) by a score of 7-1 and then pinned Jack Newman (Kenston) in 2:41 in the second round  to reach the semi's.  In the semi's, Zach hung tough against Jacob Decatur dropping a 7-3 decision match.  His effort showed significant improvement from just two weeks ago when he lost to Jacob by tech fall in the Barberton Sectionals.  Zach went on to win an overtime victory in the Consolation Semi's which put him again 6th grader, John Cline in the consolation finals.  Zach lost to John by a score of 6-2, but all said and done,  was the first Kratos wrestler to reach a finals match in our club history.

Matt Slater also reached the Championship Semi-finals by defeating Jeff Lornence (Aurora) in the first round by a score of 12-0 and then pinning Jacob Cook (West Branch) in 2:35 during the quarter finals.  Matt lost his Championship Semi-finals match to eventual champion David Hayhurst of North Canton by pinfall in 0:42.  Matt entered the consolation bracket but lost against Jeff Lorence as Jeff fought hard to revenge the earlier loss in the day.  Matt won his 5th/6th place match by pinfall against Jacob Cook who had also worked his way back through the consolation brackets

Ronnie Pietro got things kicked off with a 9-0 decision in the first round against Bryce Daniels from Glen Oak.  In his second round, Ronnie lost against a 6th grader from Aurora, Jarrod Brezovec and then lost his next round in consolations against nemesis, Terrell Grant from Akron Gladiators.

Overall, our results showed that the team has really come a long way since last year where we didn't score a single point.  Our team bested many perennial programs such as Twinsburg, Solon, Maple Heights, and Medina.  With both Ronnie and Zach back next season,  its a great foundation upon which to build.

2/5/10: Three Kratos Wrestlers Head to OYWA States

Congratulations to Zach Wiseman (52lbs), Ronnie Pietro (60lbs), and Matt Slater (145lbs) on their top 4 finishes at OYWA Medina Highland Districts. The top four in each weight class will travel to Akron Firestone on Sunday, 2/14/10 to represent Team Kratos at the OYWA State Championships. Matt Slater finished in 2nd place at the 145 lb weight class while Zach Wiseman and Ronnie Pietro finished in 3rd place at their respective weight classes.

OAC Championship Qualifiers
Kratos sends three wrestlers to the OYWA Championships. Zach Wiseman (52lbs), Matt Slater (145lbs), Ronnie Pietro (60lbs)

The Districts Tournament consisted of the top 4 finishers from four various sectionals, so the ability for any wrestler to finish on the podium is quite an accomplishment. Kratos Wrestling had 5 wrestlers who made it all the way to the consolation semi finals and were within 1 match of qualifying. Last year Kratos had 2 wrestlers make it to OYWA, so our improvement Year to Year reflects the dedication and hard work put in by the boys

We wish Zach, Ronnie and Matt the best of luck at Firestone.

1/30/10: 13 out of 14 Kratos Wrestlers Qualify for OYWA Districts

In the first round of the OYWA League Championships, Kratos Wrestling saw 13 of their wrestlers earn a trip to district competition to be held next weekend at Medina Highland. "Coming into the Sectional competition, I told the boys that each of them had a realistic chance of qualifying for Districts by placing in the top 4 of their weight class." commented coach Doug Williams. "The boys rose to the occasion and we were able to place 12 of the 14 wrestlers into the championship round for 1st or 2nd place." Only one Kratos wrestler didn't make the championship round however he was able to fight back for a 3rd place finish in the consolation brackets. "I reminded the boys that last year, our team had a good showing at Sectionals, however we coasted into the finals and then let the pressure off which resulted in a number of close loses in the finals or consolation finals. This year was a different story and the boys remained focused through the end."

Ronnie Pietro at St Ignatius
Kratos wrestler Ronnie Pietro works behind for a takedown

Taking first place for Kratos included Ronnie Pietro (60lbs), Mason Coleman (67lbs), Nathan Szoch (86lbs), Oleg Waters (95lbs), Zach Lewis (110lbs) and Matt Slater (145lbs). Several of our kids finished in second place but lost to wrestlers who are favorites to win the OYWA League Championships. Taking second place included Zach Wiseman (52lbs), Matt Williams (56lbs), Nick Farrell (70lbs), Mitchel Souchek (73lbs), Kyle Minor (79lbs), and Austin Mullens (82lbs). Our unseated 102 lbr, Joey Hawthorne brought a hard nosed attitude and was able to capture 3rd place. Congratulations to all the Kratos Boys and now let's get focused on Districts.

1/24/10: Kratos Wrestlers Finish Dual Match Season with 14-1 Record

Kratos wresters finished the 2009/10 dual match season in the same manner in which they started by posting wins against OYWA Rivals Akron Buchtel (32-13) and Woodridge (15-6). These wins allowed Team Kratos to improve their overall season record to a dominating 14-1 record. "As a team, we have a solid line-up from top to bottom where each kid has proven the ability to always be a threat, regardless of whom they are up against. Additionally, they have learned to not allow easy points to be given up." comments Coach Williams, "Their full-of-fight atitude has carried them well through this year's dual match season." The test for the team begins next week where our goal is to qualify all of wrestlers for OYWA Districts.

1/16/10: Kratos Wrestling Finishes in 2nd Place at Wadsworth Duals

On Saturday afternoon, nineteen youth wrestlers from Hudson-based Kratos Wrestling set out to prove that their team was a force to be recognized within Northeast Ohio. Kratos wrestlers competed in an eight team dual match tournament at Wadsworth High School. Once wrestling began, Kratos wrestlers downed two youth programs in dominating fashion by knocking off Manchester with a score of 54-7 and Strongsville by a score of 49-6. Kratos wrestlers then shifted gears to grind out two more exciting victories in closely fought matches against powerhouses North Royalton (66-25) and Medina (51-42). "The boys really battled hard and were able to raise their level execution throughout the day", commented Coach Doug Williams. The Medina match victory was especially exciting since both programs traded the overall team point lead several times throughout the match. A critical pin by Kratos wrestler Matt Slater (6th grade) in the final bout of the match was able secure the win for Team Kratos.. With a 4-0 team record, Team Kratos was paired against Wadsworth to determine overall tournament winner. While Kratos wrestlers gave it their best shot, Wadsworth, the top rated youth program in the state, came out ahead by a team score of 62-26. After a grueling day of wrestling, Kratos finished with a 4-1 record in the event, earned 2nd place team title, and improved their overall dual match season record to 12-1.

1/10/10: Kratos Jump Starts 2010 With a Win

Kratos Wrestling continued with the winning theme and by downing the Kenmore Cardinals by a score of 38-12 in OYWA competition. Scoring points for Team Kratos included Zach Wiseman, Matt Williams, Mason Coleman, Mitchell Souchek, Austin Mullens and Oleg Waters. "Our kids are starting to show the ability to maintain a very high pace throughout the match and match the intensity of our opponents, regardless of the situation," comments Coach Williams. "Our kids work ethic during practice are yielding result and while the marquee events such as the OYWA and OAC championships are still several weeks away, I am very pleased with the foundation of skills and conditioning at this point in the season." Next week Team Kratos will compete in the highly competitive Wadsworth Duals and against a talented team from Akron Buchtel.

12/27/09: Kratos Exits 2009 With A 7-0 Record

Zach vs MWC
Zach Wiseman get things rolling at the 52lb weight class

In dual match competition, Kratos wraps up the calendar year on a high note. Krato defeated the Mogadore wildcats by a score of 42 - 6. This improves the team record to 7-0. Scoring team points included Zach Wiseman, Matt Williams, Ronnie Pietro, Aidan Fultz, Mason Coleman, Austin Mullens, Nick Farrell, Kyle Minor, Michael Caniglia, and Zach Lewis. In one of the more exciting matches of the day, Austin Mullens was able to fight back from a 4 point deficit and win the match in the final seconds of the third period. This was especially exciting since in our team meeting before the match, we spoke at length about the need to be able to go a little bit harder when you find you are behind. Austin did just that.

In exhibition matches, Nicky Polifron won by pin to finish out an overall dominating performance for the Kratos boys.

We also had several wrestlers today who traveled to the Beachwood Beginner Brawl. Kratos wrestlers Dawson Wervey was 4-0, Gavin Wervey was 3-3, and Stevie Greer was 3-2.

12/20/09: Kratos Wrestling Improves to 6-0 Record

Kratos wrestlers begin Christmas break with a 6-0 record team record after several dual match victories. Kratos defeated the Barberton Magic's by a score of 29-9 in OYWA league competition and downed the Nordonia Knights by a score of 45-18 in a match held before the High School varsity event. Next match will be on 12/27 against Mogadore in OYWA league action.

12/15/09: Big Ten Network Wrestling Coverage

Big Ten NetworkThe Big Ten Network will double its coverage of wrestling this season, with television coverage of the Big Ten Championships, the Midlands Classic and nine duals. In addition, the network will stream 15 more duals on www.BigTenNetwork.com

12/13/09: OYWA Week 1 Results

Congratulations to the kids on a very solid performance this past weekend. Our varsity team defeated the Akron Wrestling Club (AWC) yesterday in a nail-biter event. The final score was 42 (Kratos) to 25 (AWC). Our team won 8 matches and AWC won 6 so the match was closer then the score would suggest. As predicted beforehand, AWC was going to be a tough team. They had several kids who have placed at OAC states last year and paired up against some of our better wrestlers. Our guys rose to the challenge and wrestled a pretty darn good match. Our team wrestled aggressively, we were able to capitalize on our opponents mistakes, and we went into each match with an expectation that we would win. In summary, a nice way to kick-off the 2009 OYWA league season. This improves our team's dual match record to 4-0.

Next match against Nordonia on Wednesday.

12/5/09: Tighten your Belts, Kratos is in the House

Kratos wrestlers initiated the 2009 dual match schedule by competing against several local clubs. Kratos wrestling faced off this past weekend in a Mantua Quadrangular which included talented youth teams from Aurora, Streetsboro and Crestwood. Kratos wrestlers met the challenge by going undefeated at the event. Taking top honors for Kratos Wrestling included Matt Williams, Mason Coleman, Mitchell Souchek, Nick Farrell, Kyle Minor, Chris Motter, Collin Hall, and Joey Hawthorne. Following close behind included 2nd place finishers: Stevie Greer, Tyler Johnson, Nathan Szoch, and Matt Slater.

While the varsity team competed at Mantua, several wrestler traveled south to compete in the Barberton Battle for the Belt. Kratos standout wrestlers Ronnie Pietro and Zach Wiseman both took top honors and earned for themselves the coveted championship belt buckle which is so large that Texas ranchers would be jealous. At least that's what my wife, a Texas native, told me.

11/30/09: So What's on Your Plate for Thanksgiving?

While some may have been sitting around thinking about that second or third helping of turkey and stuffing that they probably could have done without, Kratos wrestlers were dishing out their own type of Thanksgiving dinner to competitors across Ohio and Pennsylvania. Seven of our wrestlers competed in the powerhouse Top 100 event in State College, PA after attending a 2 day wrestling camp that the Chertow Training Facility, a breading ground of national champions. At the top 100 event, our wrestlers took home 4 medals to include 1st place by Zach Wiseman, 2nd place by Matt Slater, and two fourth place finishes by Ronnie Pietro and Matt Williams. Those not able to make the eastwardly trip over the long weekend competed at the Twinsburg Open where we placed two individuals to include 2nd place by Nathan Szoch. Nice job everyone and Happy Thanksgiving :-)

While most wrestling programs haven't yet started, Kratos wrestlers are hitting the mat two-days a week during the month of October. A total of 40+ wrestlers have decided to come out early and begin preparation for the 2009/10 season. "While the wrestling season doesn't start in earnest until November, what I like about this preseason program is that it offers an environment in which kids can focus on relearning those basic skills without the added pressure of preparing for a big weekend tournament", comments coach Doug Williams. "Additionally, for those kids new to the sport, the preseason program offers kids an opportunity to get a taste of what wrestling is all about before jumping into the full winter program". Kratos wrestlers kick things into high gear on November 2nd with the start of the winter season.

8/9/09: Team Kratos Announces its 2009/10 Wrestling Program Line-up

With significant growth over each of the past 4 seasons, our club must continually evolve in order to effectively meet a suite of changing needs. As such, we'd like to take a moment to introduce a few new elements for the upcoming 2009/10 season.

Team Kratos has expanded its program lineup to include two new programs in the 2009/10 season. First, Team Kratos will offer a Preseason Training Program which is specifically geared for the more experienced wrestler who desires to jump-start their season. This program will be conducted during the month of October. Next, Team Kratos introduces a Middle School OAC State Championship Training program during the months of February and March. This program will enable MS wrestlers from multiple communities to have central location where they can congregate while training for the OAC tournament

Recognizing the additional work that will come with expanded program offerings, Team Kratos has added two full-time assistant coaches to the Team Kratos staff during the 2009/10 season. These coaches are talented individuals who bring with them significant high school and collegiate experience and share the same excitement/passion in developing our youth wrestlers as do our senior coaching staff.

Lastly, and perhaps most exciting, our program will introduce the "Coaching 4 Life" curriculum into our weekly practice cadence. The Coaching 4 Life curriculum brings focus on 14 life skill characteristics. Each week, our coaches will lead a group discussion on a specific life skill and what it means for our wrestlers to embody this characteristics.

Our coaching staff look forward to the upcoming season and are committed maintaining the high level of program quality which you have come to respect. We welcome you to visit the full list of programs and details which can be found on the Registration webpage.
