6/26/08: Ken Chertow Wrestling Camp Report

Two Team Kratos wrestlers reported back from the Ken Chertow Wrestling Camp held in Wilmington, Ohio. Andrew Ritosa and Matthew Williams attended a four-day wrestling camp along with 168 wrestlers from states including Connecticut, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Ken Chertow, a former USA Olympic wrestler and 3x NCAA All-American from Penn State was the camp director. Ken was on-site each day and very involved with virtually all aspects of the program. Providing assistance to Ken included 24 clinicians which created a favorable 8:1 student/coach ratio. Special guests to the camp included head wrestling coaches from Indiana and Purdue Universities, and the Cincinnati Bengal's strength coach. The training environment was well tempo 'd and wrestlers enjoyed plenty of opportunities to not only learn new techniques, but also to reinforce their learning's through drills and live wrestling situations.

Of the 168 wrestlers, approximately 50% (80 wrestlers) were high schoolers of whom 15 were state qualifiers in 2008 for their respective states. For the youth kids, Ken's staff provided a high level of individual attention that is not typical among other wrestling camps. Although the camp pace at first was a bit of a challenge for the younger kids, by the second day, the kids adapted and were able to keep up with rate of instruction and wrestling intensity.

In summary, the camp was DEFINITELY a camp that Team Kratos wrestlers should make an effort to attend in the future.

4/27/08: Matt Slater Competes at Columbus Tournament of Champions

The 16th annual Tournament of Champions, which claims to be the largest youth wrestling tournament in the world, was held in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday,
April 26, 2008. Although several of the Hudson Team Kratos wrestlers qualified to attend, only one wrestler was able to make the trip to Columbus. First year wrestler, Matthew Slater competed in the 135lbs. Junior Division. Tournament of Champions

Matthew’s first opponent, Caleb Kettle of Salamanca, NY, a NY State champion, wasted no time in demonstrating is aggressiveness by attempting a single leg takedown. Matthew reacted with a quick sprawl and cross face counter. Once the grapplers were on the wrestling mat, Matthew switched into an offensive mode and scrambled to get behind his opponent. Matthew suddenly stunned the crowd when he was able to catch his opponent and put him to his back for pin fall at 0:52 in the first period.

After coming off such a decisive victory, Matthew battled fearlessly but came up short of points with his next two opponents.

3/30/08: Season Finale - OAC Grade School States Championships

Kratos wrestlers wrapped up an exciting 2007/8 wrestling season this past weekend with the 5th annual 2008 Grade School State Championships. This year the event was held on the beautiful campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The tournament ran flawlessly and boasted 32 man brackets in almost every weight class. Over 2,000 spectators were on-hand to create an electrified environment.

OAC Grade School State Championship Slideshow

Kratos had three wrestlers qualify for and compete at the Grade School State Championship. Kratos wrestlers were Matthew Williams (50 lbs/5&6 yr age group), Chris Motter (75lb/9&10 age group) and Matt Slater (130lb/9&10 age group). The event started Saturday morning with opening ceremonies and a parade of competitors. Soon afterwards, wrestling began.

Matthew Williams kicked things off on the right foot by winning his first match in a closely fought battle which went three full 1:30 periods. In the second round, he suffered his first defeat of the double elimination tournament and and entered the consolation brackets. Matthew went on to win his next two bouts by near fall before facing his second defeat and elimination from competition. His 3-2 performance yielded him a spot in the top 12 of the field of 32 competitors.

Chris Motter entered the tournament with knowledge that his first round match would have him paired up against a district champion from another district. Motter on DefenseNone-the-less, Chris put beside the tournament seating chart and wrestled a superb match and was able to pull off a surprise offset. He delivered a dominating performance which kept the favored competitor on his heels for the entire match. In his second round match, Chris met another talented wrestler however the decision ended in the opponents favor by a close score of 4-2. Chris entered the the consolation brackets and won his third match in another close match by a score of 5-2. Chris then lost in the fourth bout of the tournament and was eliminated from competition. Chris' tournament record of 2-2 earned him a top 16 finish.

Matt Slater wrestled in the heavyweight classification during this event. His first match ended in a loss by pinfall, however Matt bounced back and won his next OAC - Slaterconsolation bout. In this bout, Matt was ahead by a score of 2-0 in the third period, but then was penalized for several locking hands and full nelson technical violations. These penalties resulted in a score of 4-2 in favor of his opponent with approximately 30 seconds remaining in the match. Matt knew he was behind the eight ball so to speak and accordingly ratcheted up the intensity in a last ditch effort to score before the end of the final period. In a flurry of activity, Matt was able to turn his opponent and pin him with about 10 seconds remaining in the match. Needless to say, the excitement level was off the charts. Matt's victory meant that all the Kratos wrestlers were able to record at least one victory at the states, not a bad accomplishment given all of the Kratos wrestlers were in either their first or second year of wrestling. Matt dropped his next match by near fall to finish the tournament with a 1-2 record.

3/22/08: Husky Open

Team Kratos finished out their open tournament season by putting 80% of its wrestlers onto the podium at the Husky Open in New Salem, Ohio this past weekend. Team Kratos had 5 wrestlers compete in the youth tournament of whom four earned 2nd place medals. "It was an all-around nice performance", quoted coach Doug Williams. "To walk into a tournament and have just about everyone put themselves Kyle Minor at Husky Openinto the championship match was pretty exciting. Of course I'd like have seen us win a couple of the championship bouts, but that wasn't in the cards today. The tournament had some good wrestlers in attendance and all of our kids who made it into the finals had to go through kids whom had either beaten our kid earlier in the season, or are qualifiers for the OAC States tournament which is coming up this weekend." All of the finals matches were close ones. Matthew Williams dropped a 3-2 decision against another OAC States qualifer. "We may have an opportunity to get that one back next week!" comments Coach Williams. Kyle Minor also dropped a close one by 4-0 decision against an individual who took 16th last year at TOC. Chris Motter met stiff competiton in his finals round who had finished in the top 4 of OYWA this past year. "Although these defeats sting, at least we are are able to compete at the next level which leads to very exciting matches." Matt Slater pinned his way into a 2nd place finish through a round robin brackets. He recorded perhaps the fastest pin of the tournament with a pin in 0:05 of the first period.

Team Kratos will wrap up its open tournament season this weekend with the OAC States event to be held in Athens, Ohio.

3/2/08: Team Kratos Fairs Well at Bergmania and Ottowa

Sunday, March 2, 2008 two of our Team Kratos wrestlers attended the Wendy’s Restaurant sponsored “BERGMANIA youth wrestling tournament” at Heidelberg
University. Team Kratos was well represented by Kyle Minor and Matthew
Slater.

Bergmania

Each of our Kratos wrestlers went 2-1 on the days losing close matches in
their championship rounds to be awarded silver medals for their second place
finishes.

Kyle minor rebounded this week after a tough district tournament to dominate
his first opponent and win by a tech fall 11-0. In the second match, Kyle
battled an experienced wrestler and held him scoreless to win 4-0. In his
championship match Kyle wrestled a smart physical match against a state
qualifier from the Tiffin youth wrestling team, it was a seesaw battle with
Kyle coming up short to loose 4-2 in the final minutes.

Matthew stepped on the mat with a swagger after placing first in the
district last weekend. In his first match, Matthew scored a quick takedown
into a tilt to score five fast points. Going into the second period Matthew
wasted no time slamming his opponent to the mat and pinning him with a
cradle. After pinning his way into the championship round Matthew also faced
a state qualifier and made a few last minute mistakes to lose a close battle
5-3.

In separate competition, Billy Buehl captured another 1st place finish at the Ottowa Tournament on the border of Michigan and Canada. This was Billy's third open tournament championship of the season.

2/24/08: Team Kratos Achieves Record Three Qualifers to OAC States

Congratulations to Matthew Williams (50lb), Chris Motter (75lbs), and Matt Slater (HWT) for earning trips to the 2008 OAC State Tournament which will be held on March 28-30th in Athens, Ohio. For the first time in just its third year of existence, Team Kratos sends wrestlers to the OAC State Tournament. Matthew Williams and Matt Slater took 1st place finishes in their respective weight class and age group however Chris Motter was the one of the three who put in perhaps most impressive Pietro in Consolation Semis at Uniontownperformance of the day. Chris won his first two matches but then loss a close semi final match by 1 point to a wrestler from Wadsworth when he gave up one point on a technical violation with about 5 seconds to go in the match thus sending him into the consolation brackets. Chris rebounded and won the consolation semifinals during another close match that had to go into a second overtime period of sudden death oin order to be decided. During the overtime period, Chris was able to escape during the waning secs and thus earned a spot to Athens. Chris ended today's District event with a 4th place finish after losing to a wrestler in the consolation finals whom he had beat earlier in the day from North Akron.

Team Kratos also had two wrestlers finish in 5th place, Ronnie Pietro (55lbs) and Mike Szoch (80lbs). Both wrestlers were 3-2 during the day. Ronnnie and Mike battled tough throughout the day and showed improvement each time they stepped onto the mat. We certainly look forward to having both these wrestlers around next year as we continue to build a top class program.

Overall, today's performance was simply outstanding, especially when compared to last year when Team Kratos didn't have a single wrestler even come close to qualifying for states.

2/17/08: Bedford Open: Williams and Slater Medal with 1st and 3rd Respectively

A very long day for 6 Team Kratos wrestlers is perhaps the best way to sum up the Bedford open. The open division - codeword for non rookies - was expected to start at 12:30 however actual bouts didn't start until nearly 2:30pm. Regardless, several wrestlers from Hudson stuck around to give it a whirl. WrestlinSlater Win at Bedfordg for Team Kratos included Matthew Williams, Ronnie Pietro, Kyle Minor, Christian Owsley, Matt Slater, Ronnie Pietro at Bedfordand Brendan White. Most brackets contained between 10 to 12 wrestlers. Our first year wrestlers put on impressive performances. Ronnie Pietro, Brandon White, and Matt Slater had moved up from the rookie division to try their best against the more seasoned veteran wrestlers. Ronnie went 2-2 on the day with his final loss coming in the consolation semi-finals in a double overtime. Earlier in the day, Ronnie won a match against Twinsburg with 2 seconds remaining in the final period. Matt delivered a couple of headlock throws during the day which brought the fans in the stands to their feet..not sure if it was from the seismic shock wave or just the awe of watching a HWT getting thrown through the air like a rag doll :-). Matt ended up taking third place. Brandon White fought hard throughout the day and loss a couple of close matches among more experienced wrestlers.

Taking top honors for Team Kratos was Matthew Williams who went 3-0 during the tournament. Mathew had a first round bye and then followed up with two wins (10-0) and pin in 0:45 in order to enter the championship match. His final match was a hard fought battle against a competitor who had abut 3 inches of height. Matthew was able to take a quick 4-0 lead during the first period by scoring a takedown and quick 2 near fall, and then was able to maintain the advantage throughout the remainder of the match.

2/11/08: Buehl captures Another Championship

Billy Buehl represented team Krados at the Fremont Ohio Open tourney Sunday-With a 4-0 record he won first place in the 75 division

2/10/08: Beachwood Beginner Brawl, Four Team Kratos Wrestlers Deliver Perfect Outings

This weekend despite blistery weather, 10 Team Kratos wrestlers turned out at Beachwood Novice Tournament where they turned up the heat on the competition. The Beachwood Novice tournament was for 1st and 2nd year wrestlers in the age of 12 and under. Wrestlers engaged in a round robin format of three matches. Wrestling started at 12:30 and was completed by 3:30pm. The tournament was very well run and wrestling rounds seemed to take only about 45mins/session. In total, our team won 18 of the 30 matches in which we competed during the day. Four of our wrestlers (Matt Williams, Ronnie Pietro, Chris Motter, and Kyle Minor) delivered perfect engagements by going undefeated during the days competition. In addition to these standout performances, Joey Hawthorne and Brandon White both went 2-1. In Joey's single loss of the day, he dropped a close match against a wrestler who had pinned him earlier in the season.

2/3/08: Highland Districts, Buehl Reaches One Win Away from States

Today, Billy Buehl, Chris Motter, and Michael Szoch represented Team Kratos at the Highland Districts Tournament. In order to compete in this tournament, our wrestlers had to place in the top 4 of the Sectional tournaments held last week at Springfield. Given this was the first time Team Kratos has fielded and entered the varsity level tournaments, our goals today were straightforward: wrestle hard, go head to head with our competitors, win some matches, and see where that would take us. Our wrestlers accomplished that goal.

Billy Buehl went the farthest in the Districts tournament and came within one match of earning a trip to states. In order to qualify for states, a wrestler had to place in the top 4 of today's Districts tournament. Billy decidedly won his first round, but then lost a second round to a physical wrestler from Cuyahoga Falls . Billy then came back through his consolation brackets and won the next several matches before losing in the consolation semi finals to a wrestler from North Akron whom Billy had wrestled against twice before this season. In total, Billy was 3-2 for the day which is pretty darn good for a 2nd year wrestler.

Chris Motter and Michael Szoch also recorded wins today. Chris went 2 -2 on the day where all his losses were by close decisions. Michael was also able to record one win against Mantua before his elimination from the tournament.

All said and done, the boys did very well and displayed that they could compete and win against some very good wrestlers.

In separate wrestling action, Christian Owsley took a 4th place in the Smithville open tournament on Saturday. Christian has been wrestling during the"off days" at Stow and CVCA and his extra effort has begun to pay off.

2/2/08: Team Kratos Summer Camp(s) Announcement

No shadow...spring is coming and with it, a need to begin to think about summer wrestling camps. This year, Team Kratos would like to make a big push to see all of its wrestlers attend at least ONE summer camp and possibly both. There are a couple of options.

Option 1: Joe Caniglia runs a 5 day (~2 hrs / day) camp through HCER. This camp is typically held the first week after school gets out. The camp allows an opportunity for youth wrestlers to learn fundamental skills and provides participants who are new to the sport, the ability to gain exposure to the sport of wrestling. The camp will also provide a good tune for the Ken Chertow camp later in June.

Option 2: Team Kratos has flagged Ken Chertow Wrestling Camp in Wilmington, Ohio as this year's team camp. This camp is earmarked for our youth wrestlers who have at least one season of wrestling experience. Ken Chertow camps are well run and tailor instruction based upon the individual's wrestling experience and maturity. Group discounts are available if we are able to register 8 or more kids. The camp is June 23- June 26. Please email Coach Doug Williams should you have an interest in attending this camp.

1/27/08: Beachwood Brawl, Six out of Seven Take Podium Finishes

Seven Team Kratos wrestlers traveled north to Beachwood for the renown Beachwood Brawl. In years past, this tournament has drawn 500 + wrestlers to include teams from out-of-state locations such as West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. This year was no exception. Youth wrestlers Matthew Williams, Aidan Fultz, Ronnie Pietro, Kyle Minor, Tyler Lewis, Christian Owsley and Matt Slater took on the challenge. Things started a little rough for Team Kratos when Christian re-injured a knee during warm ups which forced him to withdraw before the tournament could begin. This injury followed by several first round defeats had a dampening effect, however Team Kratos rallied and clawed its way back during the reminder of the tournament to earn six podium finishes. Earning recognition included: Matthew Williams (1st Place, 50lbs), Aidan Fultz (2nd Place, 55lbs), Ronnie Pietro (3rd Place, 55 lbs), Tyler Lewis (4th Place, 90 lbs), and Kyle Minor (5th Place, 70 lbs), and Matt Slater (5th Place, Hwt).

1/26/08: OYWA Sectional Results

The journey to OYWA States competition began this weekend with the OYWA Cowboy Division Sectional Tournament held at Springfield Junior High. Team Kratos entered six wrestlers in the sectional tournament. In order to proceed to the next round of tournament competition, OYWA Districts, a wrestler had to finish in the top 4 of his weight class. Of our six entrants, Team Kratos had three wrestlers qualify for Districts. District Qualifiers included Chris Motter who earned a 2nd place finish at Sectionals, Billy Buehl and Michael Szoch, both of whom took a 4th Place finish at Sectionals.

OYWA also held exhibition matches in the 49lbs weight class this weekend. Team Kratos' Matthew Williams competed in this exhibition bracket and finished 3rd.

OYWA Districts tournament will be held next weekend at Highland.

1/20/08: Perkins Pirates Tournament Update

Four wrestlers from Team Kratos competed at Sandusky Perkins Tournament of Champions qualifier on Sunday 1/20/08. Team Kratos finished with two- 1st Place finishes (Matt Williams & Billy Buehl) and one 3rd Place finish (Michael Szoch). We got a chance to wrestle teams that we don't typically see in the Cleveland/Akron area and were able to stamp a seal of authority.

In one of the more exciting matches of the day, Billy Buehl knocked off a wrestler who had finished 7th in the 2007 Columbus Tournament of Champions. Way to Go Billy.

1/13/08: Team Kratos achieves 76% medallists at Allstar Tournament

On Sunday, Jan 13th, Team Kratos competed in the Allstar tournament yesterday at Firestone High School. We had 17 wrestlers entered in the tournament and walked out thee door with 13 medallists. WAY TO GO.

Kyle Minor in Allstar Finals

Kyle Minor in His Championship Finals Bout

Historically, our team has done quite well in the Allstar event and this year was no exception. This year, 76% of our kids medalled as compared to 67% last year which, I might add is the third consecutive year of Year-to-Team improvement.

Medallists for Team Kratos included

1/12/08: Two Placer winners at Medina

On Saturday, Jan 12th, Team Kratos had four team members compete at the Medina Open wrestling tournament. The day-long event brought together over 500 wrestlers from across Northeast Ohio and a few from Pennsylvania. Most weight classes had 16+ bracket sheets, so plenty of wrestling and winning was required to earn a spot on the podium. Two of our wrestlers brought home hardware. Congratulations to Matthew Williams (1st Place, 5-6 age group 45lb wt class) and Matt Slater 3rd Place, 9-10 age group HWT class)

12/30/07: Week 5 - Firestone Results

Yesterday, Team Kratos competed at Firestone against a youth squad from Green. Overall, the team continued to show good progress week to week. In all, Team Kratos had 18 wrestlers see action. Of the 18 matches in which we competed, we posted nine wins, seven losses and two ties which brings our winning percentage on the day to 0.563, an improvement from last week and a continuance of the upward trend week to week.

In the varsity matches, we fielded six wrestlers in total. Making his varsity debut, Ronnie Pietro achieved a commanding 11-3 win to get things rolling for Team Kratos. Mike SzochRonnie, a first year wrestler, has really taken to the sport and improves his record to 4-0 on the season. Following in his footsteps were several exciting matches by Billy Buehl and Chris Motter. Billy won in a close 4-3 decision by coming from behind to go ahead with a 2 point takedown and the toughening out a 3rd period to keep the advantage. Christopher Motter won his match by 7-4 decision by overcoming a several locking hand violations which nearly led to a technical disqualification. Chris was able to take his opponent down at will, however his opponent had a very quick sitout from the bottom position which caught Chris in a locking hands position on several occasions. For those of you new to the sport, a wrestler is not allowed to lock his hands around the opponents waist while on his knees. If he does, the referee issues a technical violation. If a wrester accumulates 4 technicals in a match, he is disqualified.

As a change of format, we had an opportunity to allow both the Varsity and Allstars wrestle back to back on the same mat which made for a really exciting event. We paired our varsity wrestlers against Green and then paired our Allstars with Green's Allstars as well. In All star competition, our team won six matches, loss four matches, and tied two. Winning in Allstar competition were Matt Williams (improves to a 2-3 record ), Jack Jesionek (improves his record to 3-1), Kyle Minor (improves his record to 3-0), Grant Gasser (improves his record to 4-1), Hunter McCollough (who captured his first victory of the season), and Matt Slater (improves to a 2-3 record).

12/23/07: Week 4: Firestone Results

The varsity team recorded five wins which included Christian Owsley (by 8-5 decision), Nicholas Farrell (by 9-0 decision), Billy Buehl (by 4-0 decision), Chris Motter (by 9-7 decision), and Michael Szoch (by pin at 0:35). Castrigano Picks up His 2nd Win

12/9/07 - Week 2: Firestone Results

This past week, Dec 9th, Team Kratos competed against North Akron. Our varsity team met stiff competition and was unable to win a match. "Although I am not completely surprised with the outcome given this is the first year we have fielded a varsity team", commented coach Doug Williams, "it does leaves a bitter taste to go winless in a match. I spoke with the varsity kids after the match and believe they now have a better understanding of the skill improvement they need to make in order to be competitive. We will all take some time to review the videos of each match, work hard in practice, and come back next week with the goal to have shown improvement." On the Allstar mats, our team recorded eight wins - congratulations to Ronnie Pietro, Nikolas Jimenez, Aidan Fultz, Chris Castrigano, Emery Galat, Grant Gedeon,Ryan Klespies, and Grant Gasser.

12/2/07 - Week 1: Firestone Results

Nathan HannaHudson Youth "Team Kratos" Wrestling completed their opening match at Firestone High School on Sunday, December 2nd where they faced off against a talented squad from Wadsworth. The Hudson wrestlers won only one bout on the Varsity mat but came back during All Star competition to win eight more matches. "We obviously have some work in front of us however an important takeaway is that as a team, we are better than we were last year at this point in the season", commented coach Doug Williams. "Last season we didn't field a varsity team and won only 11% of the season opener matches. This year we fielded both a Varsity and All Star Motter Cradlessquad and our All Stars won 47% of the matches it entered.". Team Kratos' next match is scheduled for Sunday, December 9th where it will pair off against North Akron Youth Wrestlers.
